Out of the Mouth of Babes

Sometimes people speak better than they know. That’s why we have sayings like “out of the mouth of babes”, an expression that we use when young and inexperienced people say things that are remarkably wise. That happened in John chapter 11 when Caiaphas, the high priest of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish religious court, said that it was expedient for one man to die for the people rather than the whole nation perish. Now, of course, he was talking about Jesus dying so that Rome would not take their place, their power, or their prestige. So Caiaphas is arguing that Jesus should die as a substitute so that the nation might live.

Now the apostle John is so helpful here, because he tells us that this idea of Jesus being a substitute is profoundly true, but it's got nothing to do with political life.  Instead, it has everything to do with spiritual life for anyone who believes in Jesus. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says that God made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf [that's a substitute] so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. So it was absolutely necessary for Jesus to die, to take our place, so that we might have life, spiritual life, eternal life. Caiaphas spoke better than he knew. The question is are you listening to him.

Something to think about from the Proclamation point of view.
